Threads referral traffic and website analytics

Threads can drive website traffic, but most analytics reports still show it as a relatively small referral source. To measure it accurately, use UTM-tagged links in Threads posts and bio links, because plain referrer data can be incomplete or may appear as “Direct” in analytics tools.

What matters for analytics

• Use UTMs on every Threads link so Google Analytics or other platforms can separate Threads traffic from Instagram or other social sources.
• Check acquisition/referral reports in your analytics tool for sources such as threads.net or l.threads.net.
• Compare traffic quality, not just clicks: look at bounce rate, time on site, conversions, and pages per session to see whether Threads visitors are valuable.
• Track post-level performance by tagging each post or campaign differently in the UTM parameters.

What the current data suggests

• Some publishers have seen large increases in Threads referrals, including a 20-fold rise for one outlet since January, but Threads still accounted for less than 1% of referral traffic in aggregate for publishers studied.
• Other recent data shows Threads outbound referrals rising to 51.8 million over May and June of this year, more than doubling year over year, though it still represented less than one tenth of a percent of sites’ referral traffic.
• Threads now has a dedicated referral domain to help analytics systems attribute traffic more clearly.

Practical setup

• Add utm_source=threads, utm_medium=social, and a campaign name to every link.
• If you use a link-in-bio tool or redirects, confirm they preserve UTMs.
• Review traffic in Google Analytics 4, Fathom, or similar tools under Acquisition or Traffic acquisition.
